European eco-technology for the future congress
Eco-technologies are becoming of major importance to governing bodies on both a national and international level.
They are set to open up the way for new employment opportunities and new economic activities, enabling us to minimise and effectively deal with the impact of human and industrial activities on the environment.
They will also bring significant change to our future not only due to their effective growth and greater accessibility or to the fact that they open up the possibility of new medium-term solutions, but also because all interested parties will have to take them into account on a global level.
In order to inform and provide support to regional administrative organisations, businesses and research bodies in their understanding of these main developments, the Nord-Pas de Calais region, in association with its partners and 500 ecocompanies within the region, is organising a 2-day congress.
The aim of this European eco-technology for the future congress will be to anticipate these developments and understand the fundamental changes they will bring through a programme of exchange, highlighting the chain of experiences and the remarkable experiments carried out in France and in Europe.
Programme
Inaugural plenary conference: The eco-technologies’ stakes for the future - Wednesday 10th June 2009, 9.30am-12am
9am: reception of participants at Lille Grand Palais
One of the main concerns for EU politicians is the development and use of eco-technologies, notably in the current climate in which re-boosting world economies has become a necessity. How is this seen by national and international experts? How is our country equipped to deal with this new challenge? What are the priorities for action by eco-companies and their clients?

Workshop 1: Buildings with low-energy consumption: European perspectives on innovative techniques and technologies – Wednesday 10th June 2009, 2.30pm-5pm (simultaneous English translation)
The control of energy in the field of construction lies at the crossroads between national policies and European directives, and its cultural, statutory and technical applications in European countries are rich and varied. The low-energy consumption building sector thus gives rise to ongoing research into innovative technical solutions focusing on the shell and associated systems. This workshop will be opportunity to carry out a survey of European innovations connected to energy performance of building shells: European experts will be presenting one major innovation in housing and tertiary or industrial construction from each of their country.
Participants:
Zed Factory (Great Britain) on natural ventilation - Van Ruysdael (Holland) on high performance single glazing - Mr BIEBER, Hélios ventilatoren (France) on passive housing dual-flow - Mr Philipps, Proclima (Germany) on an innovative airtight membrane - Mr Bonniere, GIE Achtys (France) on hygro-adjustable natural ventilation - Mrs NOURRICIER, Mons Polytechnique University (Belgium) on the 'energy for building' operation – Mr ROZIER, Elithis (France) on the Elithis Tower: a 5000sq metre office building using positive energy.
Workshop 2: The storage of renewable energies – Thursday 11th June 2009, 9.30am-12am
Today the storage of electrical energy from a renewable source constitutes high stakes on the global economic front. Why? What are the real perspectives and what technologies can be brought to bear?
Technological stakes and energy storage:
- The development of renewable energies within a high-level energy mix to compensate for their intermittence and the gap as regards needs, securing networks and the provision of energy...
The major groups of storage technologies: principles & markets
- Battery, hydrogen hydrolysis, flywheel, gravity storage, condensers
Storage & network: the stakes for the stability of the electrical grid
- The impacts of a decentralised energy production network, of a diffuse storage network or a high-capacity grid -
Feedback and research directions

Workshop 3: Health and the environment- Thursday 11th June 2009, 9.30am-12am
Greenhouse gas reduction, energy saving, pollution control, etc., where does health come in? What is the impact on humans? Beginning with our own homes and workplaces! What eco-technologies can give us a better-quality environment inside our living and working spaces?
The sources of pollution in the home – Inventory and effects on health
- Survey of the dangers in our living spaces and impact on health. With Mrs Odile MASSOT, Doctor in Endocrinology and Development, Biochemist, Founder of the “Santé et Environnement Pour Tous” (Health and Environment for All) agency
Air and water
- The state of the research on inside air and water pollution. What recent studies have been carried out in this field? What are the salient facts?
With Mr Fabien SQUINAZI, medical biologist, director of the Hygiene Laboratory in Paris, Head of the council service for public health
- What are the possibilities of eco-technological prevention, correction and/or cure in order to improve the quality of our inside air (measurement, analysis, pollution control, etc.) With Rutger DE GRAAF, researcher and founder of the Deltasync company

Sedimentation in ports and waterways is a natural unavoidable phenomenon, which is becoming more and more difficult to control. The SEDIMATERIAUX project is a collective initiative, harnessing the good-will of local port authorities with the aim of finding workable innovative solutions, for a sustainable on-land management of dredging sediments.

Workshop 6: Recycling in terms of Life Cycle Analysis – Thursday 11th June 2009, 2.30pm-5pm
Life Cycle Analysis, a criterion in the choice of techniques for recycling.
The regulation of waste disposal is changing as emphasis is being put on the individual responsibility of each manufacturer and rethinking of recycling rates. Although there exist many techniques for sorting and recycling each with its own economic characteristics (in terms of profit) and techniques, it is the regional economic context which will determine the most appropriate solution: thus for each given “waste product”, more than one solution for recycling will exist. But taking into account the effect on the environment, which solution is the most appropriate? The aim of this workshop is to give food for thought as to the varying solutions, allowing reflection as to the “best” recycling methods possible (from an environmental point of view) for “waste products”, while avoiding any errors linked to prejudice, incomplete networks and so on.
